St. Ambrose

St. Ambrose is pictured with the mitre and crozier that signify his role as Bishop of Milan. Considering his importance as a prelate (Milan was then the capital of the western empire), his dress is remarkably modest – just an unadorned cope over a white tunic.

The dove is one of St. Ambrose's secondary attributes, affirming the divine inspiration behind his writings. He blesses the viewer with his right hand while his left holds something that could be a beehive, another of his secondary attributes.
